- Full PayPal for freelancers is not available in Bangladesh. You cannot receive client payments into a Bangladeshi PayPal account and withdraw them.
- Xoom (it is PayPal-owned) handles inbound remittances to Bangladesh. It is not a way for you to receive and cash out freelance income.
- Payoneer, Wise and formal bank channels do the job. Bringing earnings through banks can also qualify for a remittance cash incentive.
Bangladesh has one of the largest freelancer workforces anywhere, so "where is PayPal?" is close to a national-level question here. Answering it well means clearing up one thing that trips a lot of people: the Xoom confusion.
The current status
As of 2026, PayPal does not offer its full service in Bangladesh. A freelancer here cannot open a consumer PayPal account, receive client payments into it, and withdraw to a local bank, the way someone in the US or UK can.
The Xoom confusion
Years ago, PayPal's money-transfer service Xoom became available for sending remittances into Bangladesh. Plenty of headlines at the time got read as "PayPal has arrived", and that misreading has stuck ever since. Here is what Xoom actually does and does not do:
- Xoom lets people abroad send money to recipients in Bangladesh (a remittance pipe).
- It does not give a Bangladeshi freelancer a PayPal account to receive client invoices and cash them out.
So when a client says "I'll just PayPal you", Xoom is no help. You need one of the alternatives below.
Skip the "PayPal verified account" sellers
As in any market without official PayPal, sellers will offer you foreign-registered or borrowed accounts. These breach PayPal's terms. They can be frozen with your funds still inside, and that is a common way people lose money. Don't.
What freelancers actually use
Payoneer
This is the default for Bangladeshi freelancers. You get USD receiving details, solid marketplace support, and withdrawal to local banks in taka. Verify in your own name, and expect a conversion cost when USD turns into BDT.
Wise
Wise suits clients who send ordinary bank transfers, and its rates sit near the mid-market. Before you lean on it, confirm that it currently pays out to Bangladesh.
Bank channels & the remittance incentive
Bangladesh actively pushes people to bring foreign earnings home through formal banking channels, and it has offered a cash incentive on remittances (commonly cited around 2.5%) to encourage that. The incentive is only part of the appeal. Routing income through your bank also keeps it documented and legal, which protects you. Check the current rate and eligibility with your bank, since the scheme is set by policy and can change.
Local wallets for spending
bKash and Nagad are everywhere for moving and spending taka at home, but they don't receive international client payments directly. Reach for them after the money has already landed in your bank.
Setting yourself up
- Open one account that fits how you're paid: Payoneer for marketplaces, Wise for transfers.
- Verify fully in your own name before any large payment, so funds don't get held.
- Bring earnings home through your bank to stay documented and capture any remittance incentive.
- Read our scam guide so a "PayPal workaround" never tempts you.
FAQ
So PayPal really isn't usable for freelancing in Bangladesh?
Correct, at least not for receiving and withdrawing client income. Xoom only handles inbound remittances. Use Payoneer, Wise or bank channels to get paid.
Is the remittance incentive worth claiming?
For many freelancers, yes. It offsets part of your conversion cost, and it keeps your income formal and documented. Confirm the current rate, paperwork and eligibility with your bank, since policy details change.
Can I receive into bKash from a foreign client?
Not directly, not for normal freelance invoicing. Receive into Payoneer or Wise, withdraw to your bank, then move money into bKash for spending if you like.
